Mielie pronounciation

The Afrikaans term, Mielie, is referred to as ‘corn on the cob’ in English, but easily understood and commonly used in South Africa. It’s both, a staple food in many African households and serves as raw material for manufactured products such as textiles.

As Mielie is a South African social enterprise on a mission to empower children from a young age and raise awareness about the importance of their safety. Our concern for the number of children living between gang violence and often caught in the crossfire in high-risk areas has shaped the main objectives of the business. These objectives are to share as many hats as possible, support the communities in which the children live in and provide the tools necessary to educate and up-skill.

Our solution is the creation of our signature yellow bucket hat made from anti-ballistic fabrics as well as corn waste, which is produced in Africa. This eco-friendly design is made to shield the most important organ of the body, the brain. Through design and social work, we wish to uplift and empower children to use their creativity, talents and skills in smart ways. The use of vibrant colours and trendy prints turn this serious matter into a positive movement.
